Mount Merbabu is known through pre-Islamic manuscripts as Mount Damalung or Mount Pam (a) rihan. On the slopes was once a famous hermitage and was visited by Bujangga Manik in the 15th century. According to etymology, “merbabu” comes from a combination of the words “meru” (mountain) and “abu” (ash). This new name appears in Dutch records.
Mount Merbabu has the area of Dipterocarp Hill Forest, Upper Dipterocarp Forest, Montane Forest, and Ericaceous Forest or Mountain Forest.

History of eruption;
This mountain had erupted in 1560 and 1797. Reported also in 1570 had erupted, but has not done confirmation and further research.
Similarly, according to Mac Donald 1972, reported that in th.1797, Merbabu volcano erupted through side eruptions and central eruptions, but it was not reported that the eruptions had been removed and the damage and casualties of the eruption….

Research conducted by Neuman van Padang 1951, has found that the volcano has issued basalt olivine augit, andesit augit and andesit hornblende hiperstein augit.
The rocks produced by the Merbabu Volcano are Basalt olivine augit, Andesite augit and Andesite hornblende hiperstein augit.The Merbabu volcano is formed on the convergent edge of the benni off zone where the oceanic plate dips beneath the continental plate, producing a more acidic (K-Alkaline) Ca-Alkaline magma type which is rich in Ca and Mg or Na and K. The resulting magma elements it exits through fractures (formed tectonically) through various processes of magmatism and out to the surface repeatedly (polygenetic), builds its body in layers (strato) and forms magmatic mountain clusters. The structure of the Merbabu volcano is; crater, fracture and graben of Mount Merbabu, depression of vulkano-tectonic.
Merbabu volcano has a less perfect cone shape, this is because the activity of building volcanism is smaller than the erosion and weathering activity that occurred in this volcano. According to the classification of volcanoes in Indonesia, Merbabu volcano can not be determined for sure, this is because reference time or year eruption activity in the past is still confusing the truth.
The phenomenon that appears on the volcano Merbabu is the existence of geothermal anomalies with the appearance of sulfatara gas (which sting), hot springs and mud slope in the crater.
