Technical implementation Unit
Rawa Singkil is designated as Natural Landscape Area based on Forestry Minister’s Decree no. 166 / Kpts-II / 1998 on the change of function and appointment of Singkil Swamp Forest area located in South Aceh Regency of 102,500 hectares into Nature Reserve area by the name of Rawa Singkil Wildlife Sanctuary. However, the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 103 / MenLHK-II / 2015 determines the area to be reduced to 81,338 hectares.
Until 1992, Rawa Singkil was the last remaining intact swamp forest still intact and still lagging on the west coast of Sumatra. (Giesen et al., 1992)
Nangroe Aceh Darussalam
Kabupaten Aceh Singkil
This region has peat domes of varying thickness, alluvium dykes and valleys, bumpy beaches and moist meadows, muddy plains, and terraced sea beds. Vegetation of existing plants reflects this mosaic in the form of freshwater forests, peat swamp forests, swamp forests, mangrove forests and riverine forests. (Leuser Development Program, 1995)
The city has a tropical climate. This is a lot of rainfall in Singkil, even in the driest month. Climate classification Köppen-Geiger is Af.
Data from the Forest Service of Aceh Singkil district in 2004 showed that the trees were dominated by Meranti wood species, sea / semantok resin trees, Lime trees, Kerwing trees, Lesion trees / Medang trees.
Soerianegara (1996) also confirms that Swamp Forest is also rich in high-value tree species such as Alstonia pneumatophora, Campnosperma macrophylla, Dyera lowii, Pentapadon motleyi, Elaeocarpus littoralis, Palaquium leicarpum, Shorea balangeran, Lophopethalum multinervium, and others.
Mammals: Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), deer (Cervus unicolor), deer (Muntiacus muntjak) and wild boar (Sus scrofa). Sun bears may also still be found in some swamp forests, although the population may not be as dense as it used to be. (van Schaik, 1999)
Birds: Wetland International-Indonesia research program shows that the Singkil swamp is a habitat for approximately 40 species of birds. Some species of birds have high conservation value such as clothing (Ciconia stormi) belonging to endangered species, white wing ducks (Cairina scutulata) and tongtong storks (Leptoptilos javanicus) which are considered threatened by IUCN red list (1994).
