Note Betung Kerihun was formerly known as Bentuang Karimun and was first designated as a nature reserve based on a ministerial decree in 1982. It was an area of approximately 600,000 hectares but ten years later in 1992, the national park area expanded to 800,000 hectares. Its status as a conservation area was transformed into a national park in 1995 and reinforced in 1999

Topology&Geology
Most of the topographic circumstances of Betung Kerihun National Park are hilly, ranging from the Muller Mountain range connecting Mount Betung and Mount Kerihun, as well as the boundary between Indonesia and Sarawak, Malaysia. About 38% of it stretches at an altitude of 200-500 m above sea level and only about 5% less than 200m above sea level and 1% at altitudes above 1,500m above sea level.

Identification This national park has eight types of forest ecosystems such as lowland forests, old secondary, Dipterocarpus, sub-montana, and montana; with a high diversity of 1,216 plant species consisting of 418 genera and 110 families (75% of Kalimantan’s endemic).

A total of 14 species are “new records” in Indonesia such as Musa lawitiensis, Neouvaria acuminatissima, Castanopsis inermis, Lithocarpus philippinensis, Chisocheton cauliflorus, Syzygium spicata and Shorea peltata, and 13 species of palm is a “new record” in Borneo, among others Pinanga bifidovariegata and soka ( Ixora sp.).

Fauna

Endemik
Identification Mammals (terinventarisir 48 types of mammals): Duta tiger (Muntiacus muntjak), Golden Deer (Mutiacus atherodes), Sambar deer (Cervus sp), Kancil (Tragulus napu), a type of beaver (Lutra sumatrana) declared rare by IUCN can still be found in the ‘Mendalam’ watershed.

Primates (found in 7 types): orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), Kelebiau (Hylobates muelleri), Hout (Presbytis frontata), Sailors (Presbytis rubicunda), Beruk (Macaca nemestrina), Monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), Tarsius (tarsius bancanus) , …

Fish: Potential to be cultivated as consumed fish is Semah fish (Tor tambroides) which is currently widely caught by society to be traded.

Birds (identified as many as 301 species belonging to 151 genera and 36 tribes, among which there are 15 species are migrants: 6 species are new findings for Indonesia, namely Acciar nisus, Dendricitta cinerascens, Ficedula parva, Luscinia calliope, Pycononotus flasvescent, Rhinomyas brunneata.

Among the Bucerotidae families found in this national park, the most prominent are the golden jaw birds (Aceros undulatus), enggang ivory (Rhinoplax vigil) which is the mascot of West Kalimantan Province.
